No time like the present, right?
I’ve been stalking others on Substack for a couple of weeks. Time to throw my words out into the Substack Universe, not to see if they stick or even if anyone is interested in reading them. No, I’m writing this for *ME* because I learn best by doing. And I’ll never learn if Substack is for me if I don’t try.
Do or do not. There is no try.
My husband told me recently that when I commit to something, I go all in—one hundred percent. Actually, I think his words were, “You are obsessive.” Right. Well, isn’t that the best way to get something out of your system? Binge all eight seasons of Dexter. Done. Eat fourteen grilled cheese sandwiches in the month of February. Hey, it was for a good cause! Write 250,000 words in four months? Well, I was between jobs, so…
#Goals
Ummm… Spend more time learning from others in the Substack community and less time scrolling mindlessly on Instagram. That’s a goal, right? (This is turning out to sound a bit like my high school journal, but hopefully with more self-awareness and less drama!) Honestly, I just want to write, but my stupid “real” job is getting in the way. So “journaling” on Substack might be the outlet I need. That, and connecting with readers and other writers. Lofty goals, for sure.
Brand Awareness
When my publisher said to start a Substack, I grimaced like I’d taken a big bite out of a fresh-from-the-garden-onion. We are talking a softball-sized, pungent white onion here. If you have done this before, raise your hand 🙋♀️ No one? Just me? (Yes, I have done this. Maybe if you subscribe, I’ll tell you all about it.)
Back to the publisher. I’d asked her how to start building awareness of my work, and she said that Substack is where it’s happening. So, here I am.
And here are you! Now, if you subscribe, you will hear from me… regularlyish. (I’m calling it a word. Deal with it.) I’m not committing to how frequently just yet. Let me test the waters and figure out how much Substack-time fits into my life (and my marriage). But I guarantee that you will learn about me, my writing, and random life happenings.
A girl can dream, right?
Okay, true story here. I read this post from
and went to restack it in my notes. This speaks to me. (And not just because we both have initials for names—that is a mere coincidence.) Sure, I write because I have words that “want out” and demand to be shared, if only on the screen in front of me. But who doesn’t fantasize about their name on the spine of a book? Their book on some stranger’s shelf. Their story on the big (or small screen). Their world brought to life in a theme park! (Wait, maybe not that… excuse me as I reminisce about my recent trip to Universal Studios.)Enter my portal.
So, make this girl happy and click Subscribe. And we can travel this path together!
Maybe my book (or at least my newsletters) will speak directly to you. And know that you can speak directly with me. Comment, restack, share, message me!
And since I didn’t tell you about the origin of walking in a circle OR eating the onion OR my novel, I guess I have three ideas for newsletters already! Booyah!
welcome to the neighborhood! i look forward to reading your work, and thank you for the very kind shout-out.
This is a hilarious and honest introduction! Love the "stalker for good" approach to Substack and the commitment to learning. Totally get the "real job" struggle - been there! Looking forward to your future newsletters, especially the onion story and the dream of a theme park (Universal Studios sounds like a blast!). Welcome aboard!
