Character Inspiration and Role
Dr. Shay Weaver is the psychologist that Tessa’s aunt and uncle take her to see after the death of her family. Dr. Weaver introduces Tessa to Remote Thought Intervention (RTI).
Remote Thought Intervention (RTI) is a therapy technique that uses a virtual construct for the therapist to communicate with a patient’s subconscious (because sometimes dealing with trauma on a subconscious level is necessary). Similar to how a body heals during sleep, RTI allows the patient to navigate the stages of grief subconsciously.
Dr. Weaver embodies all that is good about an effective therapist: She is nonjudgmental, astute at listening, practiced at de-escalating and re-directing, and puts the patient’s needs and welfare first and foremost (even if the patient cannot recognize this).
Beyond helping Tessa adjust to life in the urban center, Dr. Weaver acts as a mentor and guide on Tessa’s hero journey. This doesn’t mean she has all the answers. In fact, throughout the FORGED series, Dr. Weaver’s approach and beliefs shift. The more that Tessa learns, the more Dr. Weaver learns.
In more ways than one, they are on this journey together.
